The baseline: every 3 to 5 years
For a typical home with no pets, no allergy sufferers, and no recent construction, cleaning every three to five years keeps dust, pollen, and debris from building into the airflow. That matches the National Air Duct Cleaners Association guidance and what we see in the field.
Recommended schedule by home type
- No pets, no allergies: every 4–5 years
- One or more shedding pets: every 2–3 years
- Allergy or asthma sufferers in the home: every 2 years
- Smokers in the home: every 2 years
- After remodeling, drywall, or flooring work: as soon as work finishes
- After wildfire smoke exposure: same season
- Newly purchased home: before you move in
- Rental turnover: between tenants
Signs you are overdue right now
- Visible dust puffing from vents when the system starts
- Dust resettling on surfaces within a day of cleaning
- Musty or stale odor when heat or AC runs
- Allergy symptoms that get worse indoors
- Uneven airflow between rooms
- Rising energy bills with no change in usage
- Mold, pet hair, or debris visible inside a register
What about filters and coils?
Duct cleaning is not a substitute for filter changes. Replace a 1-inch filter every 60 to 90 days, or monthly with pets. Media filters typically run six to twelve months. Have the blower and evaporator coil inspected annually — a dirty coil undoes the benefit of clean ducts.
